I am a big fan of the Italian language and really hope to learn it one day. I was looking for a budget escape in Italy…In the first place, I started with Rome, but found it way too expensive for a long weekend, then Venice, but could not find a good deal and decided to head to Pisa and Florence. Who hasn’t seen ”Under the Tuscan sun’‘ and hasn’t dreamt of sun, cypresses, and wine tasting in Romantique Firenze?

First day: Pisa
We flew to Pisa and our first stop was the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Pisa is a nice city with beautiful streets and buildings. Before taking the train to Florence we drank two espressos to celebrate our Italian escape! In the late afternoon, we took the train to Florence. It took us almost an hour to get to Florence. Finally, we arrived in the late afternoon and went straight away to the Hotel Astro Mediceo – a cosy place with a great interior. I highly recommend it for the good price, the great breakfast and its closeness to the city centre.
Second day: Romantique Firenze
We had no plans for the next day. We did not decide in advance what we are going to see, do and visit in Florence. Thus, first and absolute must-do was Piazza del Duomo and Il Duomo di Firenze. We climbed on the top of the Dome and admired the panoramic view. Then we walked around the city and reached Ponte Vecchio continuing our walk to Piazzale Michelangelo and the surrounding park.
In the late afternoon, we came back to the city centre and pay a visit to Mercato Centrale (Central Market). Needless to say, this is the place to buy some souvenirs and food if you wish. The evening finished with a nice dinner and a bottle of Chianti.
Third day: sun, cypresses, and wine tasting tour
On the third day in the morning we went back to the city centre for a walk, gelato and souvenirs (Florence is famous with its leather bags and shoes – got a pair of sandals and a little matching bag ):
Furthermore, in the afternoon we went on a Chianti Half-Day Afternoon tour. That was the highlight of the trip! We went on an organized tour with a group. This wine-tasting tour included a visit of two wineries. We travelled for about an hour and arrived at the first one: Azienda Agricola Poggio Amorelli. We tasted about 5 different wines with bites, cheese and truffle and olive oil starting with the lighter one and progressing to the strongest ones. It was an amazing experience as we got an explanation about all of them in details and felt fuzzy after the degustation ):. Azienda Agricola Poggio Amorelli has an online shop and ships worldwide.
Castello di Monteriggioni
The second wine-tasting was a completely different experience as it was in a small shop in the Castello di Monteriggioni. Azienda Agricola Montechiaro di Alessandro Griccioli welcomed us in their little shop and we tasted two different types of wine. This wine-tasting was cosier and can be qualified as a ”drinking wine with locals” compared to the first one which was more exquisite and scientifically explained. We had time to walk around the castle and to take some pictures after the degustation.
Fourth day: Ciao Bellissima Firenze! Arrivederci a presto!
